The Journey
Every day carries the same weight
Ten days, almost entirely by regional train, from Ventimiglia to Trieste — with no car, and no fixed script beyond the railway timetable itself.
Some days begin early and cover a long stretch of coast. Others are deliberately shorter, leaving more time off the train. There are long lunch stops in places such as Camogli, Diamante, Termoli, Ravenna and Venice, and one full day when the journey simply stops moving.
A train ride, a lunch stop and a place to sleep are all part of the same route. The overnight bases were not chosen as a list of destinations to collect, but because they make the railway journey work: they break up long sections, create time to get off the train and keep the following day realistic.
The timetable gives each day its structure, but it is not meant to make the journey rigid. Stay longer, leave earlier, skip a stop or replace an overnight base: the line remains, even when the rhythm changes.
LungoCosta 0 is the version we built and tested. It is also a starting point for building your own.
Day
00
Arrival in Ventimiglia
Dinner and overnight stay · Night: Ventimiglia
Arrive the evening before so the journey does not begin in a rush. One night at the border, ready for the 07:00 departure.
Arriving in Ventimiglia the evening before means the start of the journey does not depend on a long-distance connection, and lets you begin calmly on the first train at 07:00.
If you are arriving from outside Italy, Ventimiglia is often a natural end-of-day stop. Staying overnight makes the following morning simpler and more predictable.
It is also the first small taste of the journey: dinner at your own pace and a walk through this border town before the travel days begin.
Stay close to the station so you can start the journey the next morning without an extra transfer.

“Included in Pass 1/2” means that the route is covered by one of the two consecutive 5-day Italia in Tour passes and requires no extra payment. The highlighted rows require separate tickets. Day 7 does not appear in the base cost because it is a rest day and its side trips are optional. On the Cinque Terre section, LungoCosta 0 only passes through: no additional ticket is needed if you stay on the train. If you choose to get off at one of the Cinque Terre stations, check the dedicated fare and buy the required ticket separately. Single-ticket prices shown here are 2026 reference fares and should always be checked again before travel.

The Route
One continuous rail journey
LungoCosta 0 runs from Ventimiglia to Trieste through a chain of regional railway lines, staying as close to the coast as the network allows. It is not one railway line, but one continuous journey built leg by leg around realistic connections, lunch stops and overnight bases.
Some sections run beside the sea; others turn inland because the railway does. The route follows the network first, then chooses where it makes sense to stop.
Two passes cover most of the route
Most of LungoCosta 0 can be travelled with two consecutive 5-day Italia in Tour passes. With the standard Monday departure, Pass 1 covers Monday to Friday and Pass 2 Saturday to Wednesday. Each pass must be purchased by 23:59 on the day before its validity begins.
A few sections require separate tickets. If you prefer individual tickets instead, the Train Guide explains regional ticket rules, validation, changes and what to check before boarding.
What to pay attention to
Before you rely on the pass
- Buy each Italia in Tour pass before the day it starts.
- Always recheck timetables shortly before travelling.
- Check the operator as well as the train type if you change the route.
- Optional Day 7 trips are not included in the base journey cost.
- If you add a stop or side trip, check that Italia in Tour still covers the service.
Separate Tickets
What the pass does not cover
- Bovalino → Taranto — InterCity 564 requires a separate ticket.
- Lecce → Bari — Apulia Express 4450 requires a separate ticket.
- Optional stops in the Cinque Terre — Italia in Tour can be used to travel through the section. If you get off at one of the Cinque Terre stations, a separate Cinque Terre ticket is required for travel to or from that station.
- Services operated by other companies — check separately if you choose an alternative route or optional side trip.
